Hugh was born in London.
He studied Fine Art (Painting) in London and Wales.
For five years he was employed as a Warden by the Scottish Youth Hostels Association.
At various times in this period he ran the Durness, Stromness and Achmelich Hostels.
He started turning in 1981, whilst living in Orkney.
During this time he was working in a gallery in
Stromness [the Pier Arts Centre] which houses a
collection of Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson, Barbara
Hepworth and other St.Ives artists.
In 1987 he moved with his family to Yorkshire and
set-up a woodturning workshop in Otley Mills.
In 1991 he began working at Ilkley Grammar School
as the technician in the Design Department.
He left in August 2000 to develop his own work.
He sells his work through galleries, exhibitions,
the occasional craft fair and through personal recommendations.
He is always happy to discuss and undertake commissions.
Over the last few years he has developed a
very strong interest in web design and
photography.
Hugh lives in Ilkley, with his wife Ruth.
They have three daughters.
