Design is a very important component in my work.
I have spent a great deal of time and effort
refining my designs.

But, having said this, I still regard myself primarily as
a craftsman. The physical activity of making objects,
the craft, is what really excites me.

It is the engagement with material that holds me
under its spell.
Turning wood gives you a very direct and immediate
experience of working materials.

To work wood successfully you have to develop an
intuitive understanding of its structure and growth.
You have to work with the material and not impose
yourself on it.

Experience this and you begin to realise the
power of craft.
