Wood, which is sanded and then has Tung Oil applied
to it. The oil is obtained from the Chinese Tung nut.
Pure Tung oil can be purchased in this country but the
finish tends to be flat and lacklustre.
I favour Tung based oils which are commercially
available as they have a more pleasing finish.
Rustins Danish Oil - and my own favourite - Organoil Woodsheen are both excellent.
They are both non-toxic and safe for kitchenware.

The oil is applied and left to dry.
It gives the wood a deep, rich and wonderful feel.
For me it is the perfect finish- it is not a surface coating
but one which penetrates deep into the material.

The main disadvantage is that the surface of the
object has to be very well prepared and that the
oil is applied in very thin layers.
After each layer has dried the oiled surface has to
be cut back - very time consuming and messy- but
well worth the trouble!
